Guadalest.JPG

Guadalest

In the interior of the Costa Blanca, well hidden in the mountains, lies the old village of Guadalest. The unique thing about Guadalest is that the village is beautifully integrated into the rocks.

Guadalest is about a 50 minute drive from Relleu. The almost thousand year old village is completely situated around the castle. The castle, simply called El Castell de Guadalest, has been an important defense point for the Moors against the Spanish for many years. Because Guadalest could only be reached via an entrance carved out of the rock and the castle had towers that protruded above the rocks like a crow's nest, it was easy to defend. From the beginning of the seventeenth century, the Spaniards have ruled Guadalest.

Over the centuries, the village has expanded beyond the natural boundary defined by the rocks. However, most of the sights are still within the old core of Guadalest. In addition to the castle, noteworthy are the attractive market square, the town hall and the church built in Baroque style. Museum lovers can visit two museums. Those who visit Guadalest also get a beautiful view of the reservoir built in the last century, which has been supplying a large part of the province of Alicante with drinking water for years. Anyone who wants to visit Guadalest will have to take into account that there are quite a few height differences to overcome. A visit to Guadalest is not recommended for people with reduced mobility.

Aitana Safari Park dubbel.jpg

Aitana Safari park

This beautiful safari park is located in the Sierra de Aitana, in the municipality of Penàguila, at 1,000 meters above sea level, at a 35 minute drive from Relleu.

This is a gigantic safari park (1.500.000m2)where the animals can live in complete freedom, just as they could in the great outdoors.

You drive through the park in your own car, accompanied by a park ranger, who will stop every now and then to feed the animals and give you an explanation about the animals. In Spanish but if you ask, also in English. Pay attention; there are only 2 feeding departures per day, ask us for more information.

The animals you will see include: lions, tigers, elephants, hippos, giraffes, antelopes, kangaroos, bison, etc.!

There is also a small zoo adjacent to the park, which you can enter on presentation of your safari park entrance ticket. Here are some smaller, but certainly equally interesting animals. There is also a playground and restaurant where you can eat or drink something.

Castillo Alicante dubbel.jpg

Castillo de Santa Bárbara (Alicante)

A 45-minute drive from Relleu, 166 meters high on the Monte Benacantil hill in the city of Alicante, is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Although the castle is over 1,000 years old, it is well preserved and largely intact. The oldest remains that still exist today date from the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries. Much of the castle was only added after the Middle Ages.

The castle was used for military purposes for a long time and some parts served as an occasional prison. You will discover ruins of the original church, a large moat and imposing cannons that were supposed to protect the city. Within the walls of the castle you will find a watchtower, dungeons and a palace. The tower hangs over a cliff and gives you a breathtaking view of the port of Alicante.

The easiest ride up is via the lift.

You reach the lift via a 205 meter long walking tunnel, the entrance of which is on Calle Jovellanos. Admission to the castle is free, but a fee is charged for the lift.

The sports enthusiasts who venture on a climb can choose from different hiking trails. After all, all hiking trails lead to … Santa Barbara.
